I was born in Grand Rapids, MI and while my love for racing started while living in Virginia for some of my childhood, I really began focusing on it more after returning to West Michigan at 15 years old. I found myself living in the small town of Zeeland, MI, in between Holland, MI and Grand Rapids, MI and graduated from Zeeland before moving to Kalamazoo to attend Western Michigan University.
I admit that for many of my years growing up and even into adulthood, I took for granted what Michigan had to offer. It is easy to get caught up in your day to day routine and never realize all the amazing things your own backyard & hometown has to offer. As I raced and traveled more and more, having the opportunity to compete to other states and countries regularly, I was always excited to visit new places and see the sights only to come home and feel like there was nothing to do.
Boy was I missing out! It wasn’t until my sons started to get a little older did I begin to appreciate all of Michigan had to offer. Living in Holland especially exposes my family to the beauty of Lake Michigan and the gorgeous surrounding sandy beaches and dunes, amazing sunsets and countless activities.
Now when I return from travel, I spend little time sitting and more time exploring museums, zoos, beaches & parks with my family and we still have yet to even scratch the surface of what Pure Michigan has to offer. As a proud Michigander, I can only hope my kids appreciate their home as much as I have realized I do. Until then we will try to take in every kayaking, biking, canoeing, fishing, boating, skiing, snowmobiling or sand dune jumping adventure we can muster.
